Ideal’s Sandwich and Grocery has won a Bib Gourmand in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide American South. It is the only Durham restaurant with that distinction on Michelin’s own Durham listing.

The guide’s second edition was revealed Wednesday, Oct. 21. Discover Durham, Durham’s official tourism agency, said Ideal’s is a new addition this year.

All four Durham restaurants from the first edition return as Recommended, Discover Durham said. No Durham restaurant holds a Michelin star.

About Ideal’s

Michelin lists Ideal’s in its lowest price band, a single dollar sign.

The shop bakes its focaccia and rolls each morning and fills them with Northeastern deli classics, Discover Durham said. Its owners opened it in 2021.

The Bib Gourmand is named after Bibendum, the Michelin Man. It recognizes skilled, unpretentious cooking at a modest price, according to Discover Durham’s summary of the award. It is not a star.

Tesoro in Carrboro, about 11 miles west, also holds a Bib Gourmand on Michelin’s Durham-area page.

Across North Carolina, the 2026 guide has the state’s first Michelin star, 11 Bib Gourmand restaurants and 45 Recommended restaurants, according to Visit NC, the state’s tourism office.
