The leash rules
- Durham County ordinance: it is unlawful for anyone owning or keeping a dog in the county “to intentionally or negligently allow the dog to run at large.” An animal control officer who sees a dog at large may seize and impound it and issue a civil penalty, according to the ordinance text quoted by the UNC School of Government (Durham County Code, sections 4-86 and 4-87).
- City greenways and parks: Durham Parks and Recreation’s trail etiquette says “pets on the trail should be on a leash and under control,” and reminds cyclists that “wheels yield to heels.”
Dog-friendly patios and markets
- Ponysaurus Brewing, 219 Hood St.: “Dogs are welcome in the beer garden”; open daily (taproom page).
- Durham Craft Market, Saturdays in Durham Central Park, 501 Foster St.: open to well-behaved, leashed dogs, but the Durham Farmers’ Market next to it is not (craft market FAQ).
Restaurants and bars with a dog-friendly patio can tell us through our contact page and we will add them.
