Where it is and parking

The tour meets under the white water tower at the American Tobacco Campus, 330 Blackwell St., the company’s tour locations page says. It is the same starting point as the company’s afternoon history tour.

The campus has three parking decks, all paid through the ParkMobile app or pay stations. The campus’s visitor page says parking is generally free for the first two hours unless there is a Durham Bulls game or another special event. Our American Tobacco Campus guide lists the deck addresses, and getting around Durham covers city garages and street parking downtown.

Tickets and cost

  • $15 a person, paid online when you book. The company does not take payment in person.
  • Every tour must be booked ahead; the company asks people not to turn up unannounced without a booking.
  • Online booking closes an hour before the start.
  • Private and group tours are arranged through the company’s custom tours page.

What to know

What the tour covers, in brief from the company’s description: a murder tied to a secretive cult, a gangster story and one of North Carolina’s most argued-over murder trials. The company says hate crimes motivated by identity are left out because of how sensitive they are. It does not publish an age limit; given the subject, parents may want to read the tour description before booking for children.

From the company’s policies page:

  • Refunds: tickets are non-refundable, but contact the company at least three hours before the start and it will move you to another date. No-shows and late arrivals are not refunded.
  • Weather: tours run rain or shine. If one is canceled, you get an email and a new date.
  • What to bring: the tour is outdoors, so bring water and an umbrella or coat as needed.
  • Lost? Email trianglewalkingtour@gmail.com if you cannot find the start.

The same company runs the Downtown Durham historian-guided tour from the same water tower at 2 p.m., an African American history tour at 4 p.m. and the Durham Ghost Walk at 8 p.m. on the same Saturdays. For the stories behind downtown’s buildings, see our history and landmarks guide.

Dates and venues as listed on the Experience Downtown Durham, North Carolina calendar and confirmed on the organizer’s site.
