How admission works
The only way in is the lottery. Open enrollment begins Jan. 1 each year and stays open until Feb. 28, and families hear the result by email or text after the lottery, according to the school’s admissions FAQ. Children and grandchildren of full-time staff and of board members, and siblings of current students, may get preference, which the school says does not guarantee a seat. Voyager does not run school buses.
Charter schools are free and open to any North Carolina child. North Carolina law requires a charter school to hold a lottery when more students apply than it has room for. Charter schools do not have to provide buses or meals the way the district does, so ask the school what it offers. Our Durham public schools guide lists the district schools for each part of the city.
Calendar and bell times
Charter schools set their own calendars. The school’s own website posts its calendar; the state lists Voyager Academy’s calendar as traditional.
